The Stress, Possibilities, and Necessity of Change

(Part 2 in a Series – Read Part 1)

“When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.”

– Benjamin Franklin, American Statesman

Has change or loss touched your life recently? Maybe you’re going through them right now?

Have you changed or lost your job in this past year? Has there been a change in your health? Have you started a new relationship, or has one ended with an important person in your life?

Change is constant. There’s a passing from one phase to another and that always involves loss. But the amazing positive news is that it’s often the surprise beginning of a new springtime of life.

I shared in part 1 of this series the story of the loss of my first wife to a heart attack at 34 due to a previously undetected congenital anomaly. Peggy had to leave early, but God was gracious to heal my heart and then give me new love in Judy. Our five kids have grown and moved on, but my wife and I now have a beautiful 3 month old granddaughter. Your job loss can eventually lead to a new and better opportunity that you would have otherwise missed while you were “secure” in the status quo.

What life phase are you passing through? Can you find a way to embrace it?

Change and Loss Demand a Deeper Perspective

“When you change the way you see things,
the things you see change.”

– Anonymous

Where do you focus your attention, on your problems or on your opportunities? I suggest that you consider looking at both in light of the wisdom contained in the Stockdale Paradox.

Admiral Jim Stockdale was the highest ranking U.S. military officer in the “Hanoi Hilton” prisoner-of-war camp during the height of the Vietnam War. He was tortured over twenty times during his eight-year imprisonment. He lived out the war without any prisoner’s rights, no set release date, and no certainty as to whether he would even survive to see his family again.

During an interview about ten years ago Admiral Stockdale was asked “Who didn’t make it out?” “Oh, that’s easy,” he said. “The optimists.” To the surprise of the interviewer he explained that the optimists fully expected to be rescued by the upcoming Christmas, then Easter, and then by each calendar landmark that followed. They continually met with disappointment and ultimately “died of a broken heart.”

Stockdale concluded by explaining the paradox we will all eventually face as follows: “You must maintain unwavering faith that you can and will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties, AND at the same time have the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”

Life isn’t fair. It can even be crushing at times. But we must all rise up and deal with it.

You may be living right now in the midst of change and loss. Always remember during challenging times that positive action is more important than positive thinking.

Join me next month as we further explore the stress, possibilities, and necessity of change.

Chiropractic and the Neuroimmune Connection

Ari Cohn, D.C.

September 30, 2008, pp.1-5

Objective: To review the literature on the connections between the nervous and immune systems, and to explore the contention that chiropractic adjustments may affect neuroimmune function.

Results: There appear to be multiple modes of communication between the nervous system and the immune system. Numerous studies have demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments may have a beneficial effect on the functioning of both systems.

Proactive Care: Unfortunately the way in which many people care for themselves is reactive. They will wait until a health problem arises before taking any actions to improve their health. Many health issues could be avoided if people took a more proactive stance on health decisions and started to take care of themselves or their children earlier in life.

Children raised under chiropractic care were less prone to infectious processes such as ear infections and tonsillitis. These children had stronger immune systems and were also better able to cope with allergens such as pollen, weeds, and grasses as compared to children raised under allopathic (traditional medical) care. There is also a significant decrease in antibiotic therapy use in children receiving chiropractic care.

It is believed that chiropractic stimulates the immune system to combat infectious processes and not only helps sick people get well but helps healthy people become much healthier.

Conclusion: The nervous system and immune system have such a multitude of connections that they could be correctly referred to as a single system. The nervous system senses damage, infectious agents, and foreign bodies with the help of chemical-releasing immune cells and deals with these problems by deploying different types of immune cells to carry out specific procedures.

Disturbances in the nervous system (subluxations) diminish the ability of an individual to sense and repair damage and combat infection, cancer, etc. directly, resulting in diminished health.

Tara Parker-Pope on Health

Despite numerous health warnings about smoking, many people still don’t want to give up their cigarettes. But now tobacco researchers have found a new motivation to help people kick the habit — the family pet.

Researchers at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit say few smokers realize that secondhand smoke poses a health threat to pets. They conducted an online survey of about 3,300 pet owners in Michigan. About one in five of the respondents were smokers, while 27 percent lived with a smoker.

Nearly one in three smokers said the health of a pet would motivate them to try to kick the habit, the researchers reported in the medical journal Tobacco Control. The findings, said the researchers, suggest that public health campaigns focused on pets and smoking may be an effective way to convince some smokers to quit, or at least to help make the home smoke-free for non-smoking family members and pets.

Studies show that smoking poses a significant health threat to dogs, cats and birds who inhale secondhand smoke. They found a higher rate of mouth cancer in cats that live with smokers. They were also twice as likely to develop malignant lymphoma than a cat that lives with non-smokers. Dogs that live with smokers are more likely to develop cancers in the nose and sinuses.

“Food Matters” Movie Showings at Norton Chiropractic

Wednesday, April 8th, 7 to 8:45 p.m.
Tuesday, May 5th, 7 to 8:45 p.m.

‘Food Matters’ is a hard hitting, fast paced look at our current state of health. Despite the billions of dollars of funding and research into new so-called cures we continue to suffer from a raft of chronic ills and every day maladies. Patching up an over-toxic and over-indulgent population with a host of toxic therapies and nutrient-sparse foods is definitely not helping the situation.

The filmmakers have interviewed several world leaders in nutrition and natural healing who claim that not only are we harming our bodies with improper nutrition, but that the right kind of foods, supplements and detoxification can be used to treat chronic illnesses as fatal as terminally diagnosed cancer.

‘Food Matters’ seeks to uncover the business of disease and at the same time explore the safe, cheap and effective use of nutrition and supplementation for preventing and often reversing the underlying causative aspects of the illness. With the premise of the film being: access to solid information helps people invariably make better choices for their health.
