The Stress, Possibilities, and Necessity of Change

(Part 3 in a Series – Read Part 1 or Read Part 2)

"If you don’t create change, change will create you.” – Unknown

I mentioned the Serenity Prayer in Part 1 of this series, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

I think we mess this up a lot. Too often we resist when we need to release and we become passive when we need to persist!

The opposite of changing would be remaining the same, or at least attempting to do so. The status quo seems to have a certain appeal. It seems easier to stay, to keep doing what you feel comfortable with or at least what’s familiar.

Change, on the other hand, is risky and potentially painful. However, trying to remain small or grow more expansive inside the safe confines of a box opposes your design and will eventually become painful. The only way to make that tolerable would be to choose anesthesia, to avoid feeling much at all. Many try this method in one form or another.

“Get comfortable with discomfort. If the shoe pinches, it fits.”
– Michael Port

Reinvention is a great term and concept for what I’m suggesting (more details on this approach next month). When you boldly choose to step up and create change purposefully, on your terms, in accordance with your inner life intentions and dreams, power is released within to carry you through the actions steps to eventual achievement.

Allow me to share with you some of my current personal reinvention elements in progress.

I have been a doctor of chiropractic for over 26 years, have certainty in the excellence of my doctoring skill sets, and am comfortable in my office and local community domains. However, I have an inner drive to create the changes necessary to expand my influence and impact the health and quality of life of more people than I can in my office alone. I also desire to travel which necessitates more time freedom than I’ve been able to have in a solo doctor practice.

Therefore I searched and found another qualified doctor to join me in my practice to help me care for patients. I spent three years of my spare time writing my book “Where Does It Hurt?” , have been interviewed many times on radio and television, and am increasing my public speaking commitments to extend the reach of my body, mind, and spirit message of hope and healing for those who are suffering in our increasingly fragmented and stressful world.

“To fulfill a dream, to be allowed to sweat over lonely labor, to be given a chance to create, is the meat and potatoes of life. The money is the gravy.”
– Actress Bette Davis

Are all of these next steps completely comfortable for me or am I certain of the outcome. No, of course not! What if it doesn’t all come together? What if I fall short and fail?

I’m having to accept that for me to reach my dreams and express everything that’s within me, I must learn to release my craving for certainty, the demand to know what’s going to happen before I begin. I’m learning over and over again in my life that control is an illusion, and yet I must move boldly forward. I have one life and I’m determined to soak up all the meaning and value and share it with others.

Are there ways that you’re playing too safe or living in fear of painful possibilities ahead if you choose to create change?

What joys and contributions might you be sacrificing by excessively protecting yourself?

Join me in this ultimately fulfilling journey of change and risk. See you next month for Part 4.

Chiropractic Care and Changes in Physical State and Self-Perceptions in Domains of Health among Public Safety Personnel: A Longitudinal Follow Up Study

Wesley McAllister, B.A., D.C., W.R. Boone, Ph.D., D.C., Kevin Power, D.C., John Hart, D.C., M.H Sc., Teng Xiong, Ph.D., Michael Westbrook, D.C.
May 15th, 2009, pp.1-11

Introduction: The research hypothesis was that chiropractic care will provide demonstrable positive benefits in regard to physical/neurological state as well as self perceptions of improved health-related quality of life and wellness domains among public safety personnel. These include police, firefighters, 911 operators, and administrators associated with public safety.

Discussion: The high stress and/or physical demands experienced by public safety personnel are well documented. Moreover, since they are not likely to decrease, the need to provide health benefits to these personnel is viewed as being continuous, not short term. The pilot study coupled with the present study have provided data which suggests that over relatively short periods of time chiropractic care provides significant benefits. These benefits include improvement in both physical/neurological findings and enhanced self perceptions of Physical Status, Stress Evaluation, Life Enjoyment, and “Combined Wellness.” These elements are all important benefits for public safety personnel.

Conclusion: These data suggest that short to long term chiropractic care has demonstrable physical/neurological benefits and enhanced self perceptions of health related quality of life for the majority of volunteers serving in acknowledged areas of stressful public safety arenas.

Big Pharma Distorts Science to Get FDA Approval for Dangerous Drugs

Martha Rosenberg, AlterNet April 20, 2009

In February the Justice Department charged Forest Laboratories with illegally marketing antidepressants Celexa and Lexapro to younger patients and burying a study that showed suicidal side effects in children. But the very next month the FDA approved Lexapro for depression in adolescents 12 to 17.

In March the Justice Department charged AstraZeneca with knowing and hiding the diabetes side effects of Seroquel. But this month the FDA considers expanding the antipsychotic’s approvals to depression and anxiety.

And in January, Eli Lilly pled guilty to promoting its antipsychotic Zyprexa for unapproved and dangerous uses in a $1.4 billion settlement. But in March the FDA approved Lilly’s Zyprexa/Prozac combo, Symbyax, for treatment resistant depression (TRD). What do you get when you cross Zyprexa with Prozac? Someone who gains 100 pounds and feels great about it!

How do dangerous drugs keep getting approved? Through the best articles and spokesmen money can buy.

Forest paid Massachusetts General Hospital researcher Jeffrey Bostic $750,000 to chat up Celexa and Lexapro, according to US District Court in Boston filings. AstraZeneca paid University of Minnesota researcher Charles Schulz $112,000 to push Seroquel, according to US District Court in Orlando filings. And a decade of pain "studies" conducted by Baystate Medical Center’s Scott S. Reuben on Vioxx, Lyrica, Celebrex and Effexor were completely fabricated–including the patients say published reports.

And speaking of "made up," Coast IRB, an institutional review board which oversees some 300 clinical trials and 3,000 researchers, agreed last year to approve a human trial for "Adhesiabloc," a surgical gel that the Government Accountability Office completely made up in a sting operation. Oops.

And let’s not forget Joseph your-child-is-bipolar Biederman, a Harvard physician who, according to the New York Times, assured benefactor Johnson & Johnson his studies would have favorable results for the drug Risperdal in advance of doing them. (Why leave things up to science?)

And Charles "Paxil" Nemeroff, MD who was forced to step down in December as psychiatry chairman at Emory University thanks to unreported GlaxoSmithKline income of up to $800,000.

And the pharma funded studies continue!

‘Food Matters’ is a hard hitting, fast paced look at our current state of health. Despite the billions of dollars of funding and research into new so-called cures we continue to suffer from a raft of chronic ills and every day maladies. Patching up an over-toxic and over-indulgent population with a host of toxic therapies and nutrient-sparse foods is definitely not helping the situation.

The filmmakers have interviewed several world leaders in nutrition and natural healing who claim that not only are we harming our bodies with improper nutrition, but that the right kind of foods, supplements and detoxification can be used to treat chronic illnesses as fatal as terminally diagnosed cancer.

‘Food Matters’ seeks to uncover the business of disease and at the same time explore the safe, cheap and effective use of nutrition and supplementation for preventing and often reversing the underlying causative aspects of the illness. With the premise of the film being: access to solid information helps people invariably make better choices for their health.
